Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!
God has provided us a life, a life that is supposed to be abundant in every way. Sometimes, because we do live in this world, we will face situations that we do not always think are good. We are always having to combat against situations like these and speak The Word because God’s Word is truth! This being said, sometimes it is
kind of really hard to choose joy.
John 15:11 “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.
I often listen to a radio show called The Bobby Bones Show, and last week was a week that they deemed “Joy Week.” This week was inspired by co-host Amy’s mom named Judy. Judy is a woman with strong faith in The Lord who has faced cancer twice and won, and recently has been diagnosed for a third time. This past summer in Houston when she was actually diagnosed with this cancer that the doctors say is incurable, she immediately gathered the family that was there with her and headed to the hospital Chapel. Amy recalled this experience on the show, she said that Judy sat down to lead the prayer just moments after her diagnosis. Judy prayed to God not that she would be healed but that God would use her and her experience for good. Judy is someone who chooses joy every day, even in the midst of times that seem completely not joyful. Amy often recalls how Judy will speak to people on elevator rides in the hospital, even though people don’t always respond to her. The message last week on the Bobby Bones Show was inspired by Judy. Judy chooses joy and lets her strength lie in The Lord no matter what.
Psalm 118:24 This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.
This is what we are called to do, we are called to choose God and to choose joy in all things. This can be as simple as choosing joy when you’re on the way to work and spill coffee all over your white pants or you may have to choose joy in tougher situations like not-so-good news about your health or a troubled relationship with a loved one. Choosing joy has a positive affect on our lives and by choosing joy people can always see the light of The Lord shining within us. As Austi said in Choose God, Choose Life, Choose Happiness, every day we wake up and are faced with choices. We have to choose whether or not we are going to rely on The Word that day, we have to choose whether or not we are going to be happy that day no matter what. God has given us life and life more abundantly, but it is by our own free will and by our own choices that we choose to be joy. After all, we are reminded in John 15:11 that our joy is to remain full.
Nehemiah 8:10 Then he said to them, “Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
The Bobby Bones Show is a country radio talk show and Amy is open about her relationship and belief in God on air. Because of Judy, Amy, and their love for The Lord they were able to reach hundreds of thousands of people last week. The Choose Joy movement spread to countless people and impacted many people’s days and some people’s lives. They allowed The Lord’s goodness to shine through them and because of this, many people probably experienced God and Christianity in a way that they never have. The joy movement was a place where selfish actions weren’t anywhere near, but people were selflessly being kind and extending love–no matter if the other person believed in God or not, was of the same political standings, was young, old, rich, or poor. This Choose Joy movement should be a movement of all Christians, every day of our lives. We should not only all be choosing joy every single day but also extending joy because God has given us a good life and God is good all the time. When we are coming into agreement with God and His Word only, we will have nothing but joy at the beginning and the end of every day. Because we do live in this world we will face things that are tough, but even when situations we face sometimes do not seem joyous, God promises us that in the end when we are on His side, we are the victors.
Psalm 32:11-11 Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous; And shout for joy, all you upright in heart!
God has offered joy to us on a silver platter, but it is our choice whether we are going to extend our hand and take from the platter what is being freely given to us. Extending joy to all you know can be as simple as buying someone’s cup of coffee today, extending a smile, telling someone “Hi,” or buying someone a tank of gas. You never know what kind of movement you will start by choosing joy today and extending it to all you come into contact with. In big ways, in small ways, in easy times and in tough, I challenge you to choose joy today because we have so much to be joyous about!
Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
